Today has really puzzled me.
It started quite positive. It seemed like the costs of the NZ medical bills wouldn't be that harsh after all.
Sabine has to get a police check for the visa process (apparently) so we spent a good long time this morning dealing with that. We walked from building to building, no thanks to me and walking a longer, less complicated way to get to a police station. In the end we found out that a shop, A SHOP, does notary. Not an police station, not an office, not a lawyer like in the UK, but a shop. A stationary shop. And only for $15. Woah.
We felt Okay about things.
We were both bummed out that the medical checks in LA can only be performed by a doctor who's hours are during the week. It would have been better to go on a weekend.
I was Skyping dad, emailing Sabine at the time, when she sent a message to go and see her right away. I ended the Skype call, took some things with me including a sandwich, and set off.
I arrived but couldn't find her anywhere. In the end I set up camp leaning against a window. She arrived, saw me, and took me aside outside. Apparently, our meeting yesterday went down incredibly badly. Very badly indeed. they said that from here on, she would need to 'prove herself' if she wanted to stay and would need to work something like 10-12 hour shifts every day including weekends. It seemed they had decided they wanted us gone.
Maybe we didn't play our cards right and should have tried to make it work for a few months before her handing in her notice. However Sabine quit today. It was the end. We now have 30 days to leave the country.
We spent the rest of the afternoon dealing with packing, and uploading info on our bed and kitchen stuff on sales pages on social network sites.
Around 8pm, Sabine got the offer letter email about her position at Otago university.
